Architects and Territories aims to deepen the understanding of several architectural practices operating in different countries, primarily in alpine contexts, by presenting their work and exploring the relationships between their architecture and the territories it interacts with.
This meeting is dedicated to the Engadine, a valley in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, which embodies the myth of the Alps, home to thinkers and artists, boasting ancient building and decorative traditions, while also having become, for the past two centuries, a destination for exclusive and demanding tourism.
In this complex context, the work of Hans-Jörg Ruch (Bellach, CH, 1946), whose career spans three decades, is situated. Ruch has mainly focused his design efforts on the restoration of traditional Engadine farmhouses, transforming them into private residences. His portfolio also includes several public buildings, such as the expansion of the Hotel Saratz in Pontresina, the electric switching station at Albanatscha on the Giulia Pass, the renovation of the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz, the extension of the Chamanna da Tschierva mountain hut on the Bernina, and the restoration of the thermal pavilion at the Paracelsus Forum in St. Moritz. Ruch’s work, deeply rooted in the Engadine context, conveys not only a profound knowledge and respect for history but also a remarkable ability to engage with contemporary architecture through unique compositional and material choices.
Architetti e territori si propone di approfondire la conoscenza di alcuni studi professionali che operano in paesi diversi, prevalentemente in contesti alpini, presentando il loro lavoro e indagando le relazioni con il territorio con il quale la loro architettura si misura.
Questo incontro è dedicato all’Engadina, la valle nel cantone svizzero dei Grigioni, che custodisce il mito delle Alpi, abitata da pensatori e artisti, vanta antiche tradizioni costruttive e decorative e al tempo stesso è divenuta, da due secoli, meta di un turismo esclusivo ed esigente.
In questo contesto complesso si colloca il lavoro ormai trentennale di Hans-Jörg Ruch (Bellach, CH, 1946), che ha prevalentemente dedicato i suoi sforzi progettuali al recupero di antichi casali colonici engadinesi trasformandoli in residenze private e annovera tra i suoi lavori diversi edifici pubblici, come l’ampliamento dell’hotel Saratz a Pontresina, la stazione di commutazione elettrica di Albanatscha sul Passo del Giulia, la ristrutturazione del museo Segantini a St. Moritz, l’ampliamento del rifugio Chamanna da Tschierva sul Bernina e il recupero del padiglione termale del Forum Paracelsus a St. Moritz. Il lavoro di Ruch, fortemente legato al contesto engadinese, trasmette accanto a un’approfondita conoscenza e intenso rispetto di quanto appartiene alla storia, una capacità di lavorare nella contemporaneità attraverso scelte compositive e materiche mai scontate.
