Gianmatteo Romegialli, having understood the growth necessities of the agricultural complex La Fiorida, based at Mantello in the province of Sondrio, set off for northern Europe to make a series of visits that would enable him to comprehend the functioning of large cattle farms, machines of great technical and managerial complexity. At the same time, he wanted to learn about new experiments in the field of loose livestock housing. In the design of a large stable, there is apparently little room for architectural composition, since the priority is assigned to technical factors. But in practice, as often happens when we challenge the reasoning leading to certain choices, the architect has made a fundamental contribution in the study of the proportions between the parts and the achievement of spatial quality, putting order by extending the hierarchical and aesthetic criteria to machinery and functional needs. The footprint of the new stall –the latest building of an important agricultural tourism complex that contains livestock raising, dairy production, a retail facility, a guesthouse, a wellness center and a restaurant– protects itself against the noise of the highway, aiming its gaze towards the mountains and generating a new agricultural court. The stall for over 200 head of cattle, with a length of 125 meters, has the primary objective of improving the wellbeing of the animals, taking the space available for each animal from 7 to 21 square meters, while opting for large shared spaces, some sheltered and others in the open air, without racks, places where the cattle are offered freedom to decide where to spend time and when to head for milking, in a completely automated facility. The ordering element –which grants proportion and character to the project– is a sequence of 52 structural supports, three-way forks that make it possible to slim the laminated wood beams, which in turn sustain the roof and the elevated walkway for visitors, which thanks to its position offers a view of the life of the stall without disturbing the animals. The perimeter walls are made with automated curtains, which react to external climate conditions, prevailing winds, natural lighting and temperature, providing the livestock with a high level of wellbeing and diminishing the spread of illnesses. This latter factor is also guaranteed by the presence of 6 dormers on the roof, allowing sunlight to enter and to make an important contribution to the drying of the litters. The fact that the automation is so widespread in various aspects, including artificial lighting, forced ventilation, broadcasting of music and dispensing of feed, permits the overall staff to run the entire structure, even with a team limited to three people.
Gianmatteo Romegialli, quando ha recepito le necessità di espansione dellʼazienda agricola La Fiorida con sede a Mantello, in provincia di Sondrio, è partito verso il Nord Europa per una serie di visite che gli permettessero da un lato di comprendere il funzionamento dei grandi allevamenti bovini, macchine di elevata complessità impiantistica e gestionale, e dallʼaltro di aggiornarsi sulle nuove sperimentazioni in fatto di stabulazione libera. Apparentemente, nel progetto di una grande stalla poco spazio è lasciato alla composizione architettonica, a favore appunto di logiche tecnoimpiantistiche; in verità, come spesso accade quando si mettono in discussione le ragioni che portano a certe scelte, lʼarchitetto ha dato un apporto fondamentale nello studio delle proporzioni tra le parti, nel raggiungimento di qualità spaziali e ha avuto un ruolo ordinatore, estendendo criteri gerarchici ed estetici a macchinari e necessità funzionali. Il sedime della nuova stalla –ultimo edificio di un importante complesso agrituristico che accoglie allevamento di bestiame, caseificio, negozio, foresteria, centro benessere, ristorante– protegge dal rumore della superstrada, indirizzando la vista verso le montagne e generando un nuovo spazio a corte agricola. La stalla per oltre 200 capi lunga 125 metri si pone come obiettivo primario un maggiore benessere animale, portando lo spazio disponibile per ogni capo da 7 a 21 mq e al tempo stesso optando per ampi spazi comuni, in parte al coperto e in parte allʼaperto, senza rastrelliere, luoghi in cui allʼanimale è lasciata dunque la libertà di decidere dove stare e quando dirigersi verso la mungitura, completamente automatizzata. Lʼelemento ordinatore –che dona misura e carattere al progetto– è rappresentato dalla sequenza di 52 supporti strutturali e forcelle tripartite che consentono di assottigliare le travi di legno lamellare che, a loro volta, sorreggono la copertura e così pure la passerella aerea di visita che, grazie alla sua collocazione sopraelevata, permette di partecipare alla vita della stalla senza disturbare gli animali. Le pareti perimetrali sono realizzate con tendaggi automatizzati, che reagiscono alle condizioni esterne di clima, venti, illuminazione naturale e temperatura, garantendo agli animali un elevato grado di benessere, fatto ulteriormente garantito dalla presenza dei 6 abbaini in copertura, che permettono alla luce solare di penetrare e dare un contributo importante allʼasciugatura delle lettiere. Il fatto che lʼautomazione sia estesa a diversi aspetti, quali anche illuminazione artificiale, ventilazione forzata, diffusione musicale e così pure alimentazione, permette che il personale complessivo per gestire lʼintera struttura sia limitato a sole tre persone.
