This meeting is dedicated to the almost thirty-year journey of the Miller & Maranta studio, founded in Basel by Quintus Miller and Paola Maranta. On several occasions, the studio has found itself working in contexts that are particularly significant from a historical and naturalistic point of view; some projects confront the Alpine reality by investigating its peculiar aspects that are strongly connected to its cultural, constructive and historical identity. These include the extension of the old hospice on the St. Gotthard Pass (2010), the works carried out over the years for the redevelopment of the historic Hotel Waldhaus in Sils-Maria (1994-2016) and, above all, the recent restoration and revitalisation of the Gletschergarten museum in Lucerne (2022) – a museum with theme park opened in 1873, created to make visible the local glacial potholes, a geological phenomenon of interest to tourists. Miller & Maranta’s design for this museum – one of the most visited in Switzerland – envisages a kind of vertical tunnel unravelling through the sandstone formed twenty million years ago, in a labyrinthine path of bewilderment and discovery that ends with an ascent towards the light.
