Swiss Talks is a series of meetings dedicated to the orientations of contemporary architecture in Switzerland, from 2023 curated by Francesca Chiorino
Three evenings in the course of 2023 are dedicated to the intersections between architecture and art, from the Alpine valleys historically and geographically connected to Italy, such as Engadine and Bergell, an imaginary descent will tend to the Venice lagoon, in conjunction with the Biennale. How does an art museum age? How can a large art collection be spatially enhanced? What does it mean to design an atelier to house an artist’s work?
‘On the outside, the building rather represents Armando’s ideas, but on the inside it speaks of me as a feminist. My mother was very talented, she drew. But in the end she was just a wife who allowed Mr Professor to work. That’s why I knew from the start that my artist’s home had to be essential: a bed, a table, something to cook with. My models have always been the shepherds in the alpine pastures. I have always lived and worked in one space. I need temporariness’.
The words of Basel-based artist Miriam Cahn reveal the spirit with which she entrusted Armando Ruinelli with the project for her house/atelier/warehouse in Stampa, at the foot of the Bergell mountains.

Tre serate nel corso del 2023 sono dedicate alle intersezioni tra architettura e arte, dalle valli alpine storicamente e geograficamente connesse all’Italia, quali Engadina e Val Bregaglia, una discesa immaginaria tenderà alla laguna di Venezia, in concomitanza con la Biennale. Come invecchia un museo d’arte? Come valorizzare spazialmente una grande collezione artistica? Cosa significa progettare un atelier che accolga il lavoro di un artista?
«All’esterno l’edificio rappresenta piuttosto le idee di Armando, ma all’interno parla di me come femminista. Mia madre aveva molto talento, disegnava. Ma alla fine era solo una moglie che permetteva al signor professore di lavorare. Per questo fin dall’inizio sapevo che la mia casa da artista doveva essere essenziale: un letto, un tavolo, una cosa qualsiasi per cucinare. I miei modelli sono sempre stati i pastori negli alpeggi. Ho sempre vissuto e lavorato in un solo spazio. Mi serve la provvisorietà».
Dalle parole dell’artista basilese Miriam Cahn si evince lo spirito con cui ha affidato ad Armando Ruinelli il progetto per la sua casa/atelier/magazzino a Stampa, ai piedi delle montagne della Val Bregaglia.
